This test is used to:

• assess the blood flow through this artery
• look for blocked or reduced blood flow
• detect aortic aneurysms - a ballooning of the wall of the aorta

An aortic aneurysm is at risk of rupture once it gets to a certain size.  The mortality rate is as high as 80% should this happen.  Early detection significantly reduces this risk.
